NetID

A Key to Accessing Electronic Resources

New Students

To get started as a new member of the MSU community, you need to set up your MSU NetID. Your NetID is an electronic identity at MSU and serves as your login to many university computing and networking services.

Getting Started

  1. Find your student ID number (APID) and your PAN. Your student ID number begins with the letter "A" followed by 8 digits. Your PAN is a 4-digit number. These numbers were provided to you when you were first admitted to MSU.

  2. Activate and set up your NetID by using your APID and PAN numbers. This will require you to create a password. (Read tips for creating a strong password.)

  3. To log in to your MSU email, please visit mail.msu.edu. New undergraduate students that set up their MSU NetID on or after June 8, 2015, will be directed to the Office 365 interface (spartanmail.msu.edu). All others will be directed to MSU's traditional email system (mail.msu.edu/webmail). Note: there may be a delay of up to 15 minutes after NetID activation before Office 365 mail is available for login.

  4. Visit the Technology Resources for New Students page to learn more about connecting your devices to the network and other technology resources available to you.

Activate and set up your NetID using your APID (student ID number) and 4-digit PAN.

Students can look up their PAN through the Office of the Registrar's online PAN Request page.

If you are a student employee, your NetID and password are needed to register and use your two-factor authentication credentials. You'll use two-factor authentication to access your employment information.
